Nicole Garcia focuses on the design and implementation of practice-based approaches to the professional development and training of K-12 teachers, with a focus on mathematics teaching and learning. Her research focuses on the study and improvement of teaching practice, particularly through practice-intensive training and professional development. She co-directs the NSF-funded Organizing to Learn Practice Project which focuses on furthering the skills and capabilities of practicing teachers through engagement in professional development.
At TeachingWorks, Garcia serves as the Associate Director, developing and carrying out strategic planning for K-12 partnership work. In her role, she leads the planning, design, and implementation of all areas of k-12 professional support including in-service professional development and coaching, mentor teacher and supervisor development and coaching, district administrator support and coaching, and the development of district hiring tools. In addition, she directs the Elementary Mathematics Laboratory, including overseeing the design and enactment of practice-based professional development for teacher candidates, practicing teachers, and teacher educators.
Garcia is an experienced secondary mathematics teacher who brings expertise in working with students who have not been successful in school mathematics. She taught at an award-winning Middle/Early College that is highly successful in supporting the mathematics learning of such students. In past work, she directed a regional mathematics and science center, provided professional development to K-12 mathematics teachers, and facilitated state-wide education projects. Garcia earned a BS and MA in mathematics education at the University of Michigan.
