Check Your Residency

Your residency classification may be viewed in the “Personal Information” section of Wolverine Access. If your self-reported residency differs from the residency displayed, please review residency screening guidelines and eligibility criteria at ro.umich.edu/resreg.php, filling out a residency application if needed. Students are encouraged to complete this process promptly as processing time may be lengthy.

Academic Calendar

To view the academic calendar for the upcoming terms, please visit www.ro.umich.edu/calendar. Students in the master of arts with teacher certification (MAC) programs may not follow the academic calendar due to student teaching requirements. Students in the MAC program will be informed of their start and end dates directly from their program coordinators.

Academic and Professional Resources

The University of Michigan offers a variety of resources to aid them in their academic and professional pursuits. Take advantage of all that Michigan has to offer.

Athletics

Visit University of Michigan Athletics for information about how to purchase student tickets. Students only need to pay for tickets for football, basketball, and hockey events. All other events are free of charge with a valid MCard. New students are allotted one ticket per game.

Diversity, Inclusion, Justice, and Equity (dije)

The Marsal School is proud to be a leader in the campus-wide initiative promoting Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity. Adding "Justice" to these values underscores the role of educators in the creation of just societies. Through research, public scholarship, community building, and the preparation of education practitioners and policymakers, we articulate and advance our dije agenda. The resources below are not exhaustive, but provide lots of great information!

Family Resources

Ann Arbor has been consistently ranked as one of the top cities in which to raise a family. The city and the university provide a wide array of resources to ensure an enriching experience for all members of the student's family. The following sites provide information to aid you and your family as you transition to your life in Ann Arbor:

Health and Wellness

Graduate school may be exciting, but may also seem overwhelming at times. The university offers a variety of resources designed to help provide balance to your life and ensure you are in optimal health.

Housing

New students have the option of living on- or off-campus. Graduate and family housing is available through the Munger graduate residences and Northwood complex, which offers apartment and townhome living arrangements. Northwood boasts a family friendly community, a child development center, as well as access to local schools and nearby shopping areas. Munger and Northwood apartment rates are available on the University Housing website.

There are resources to assist students who wish to find housing off-campus. Students may search for rental properties, roommates, and more through the off-campus housing website.

International Students

The Marsal School is an educational community that welcomes and supports students without regard to their immigration status.

International students should visit the International Center website for the mandatory immigration check-in schedule as well as information about international student orientation workshops: https://internationalcenter.umich.edu/events.

Living in Ann Arbor

The Marsal School is in Ann Arbor, one of America's best university towns. While the urban energy of Detroit is just 40 miles away, Ann Arbor has a unique vibe—part small-town, part international intellectual hotbed. Ann Arbor is the area's main center for culture and recreation, where students can enjoy a variety of cuisine, museums, and musical and athletic events.

Office of the Registrar

Visit the Office of the Registrar webpage to view the academic calendar, schedule of classes, and tuition and fees, learn more about student rights and records, and order transcripts.

Other Resources
Recreation

Take a break from the academic grind and go to the gym for a workout or play on an intramural sports team with your classmates through the Department of Recreational Sports. Enjoy the University Union Arts & Programs events including weekly workshops, concerts, poetry slams, and other performances. Check out the Destination Ann Arbor for a list of the most recent happenings in the city.

Student Employment

Master’s students may be looking for jobs on- and off-campus to help offset the expenses of graduate school. The University of Michigan’s Career page lists available Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) opportunities. Most doctoral graduate students will come into the Marsal School with graduate student instructor (GSI), graduate student research assistant (GSRA), and graduate student staff assistant (GSSA) appointments. Please contact your program administrator if you have questions about your specific appointment.

Master's students in CSHPE should participate in the CSHPE spring placement for internships. These internships are paid experiential opportunities for 10-20 hours per week that students pursue while taking a full course load. For this reason, we do not recommend that CSHPE master's students pursue an additional part-time job at the start of their graduate program.

Student Organizations

The Marsal School offers students the opportunity to join several student organizations.

Also, students may get involved on campus by joining a Rackham graduate student organization or one of over a thousand other student organizations on campus.

Transportation and Parking Permits

The University of Michigan offers its own bus service to and from many areas around campus. In addition to receiving this free service, all students may ride the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (AATA) buses free of charge with a valid MCard. Routes for AATA buses include over 1500 stops around the U-M campus and surrounding areas.

The Parking and Transportation Office offers parking permits to graduate students registered for classes. Graduate students may select from five parking options:

  • Student Orange
  • Student Yellow
  • After Hours
  • Student Orange with After Hours
  • Student Yellow with After Hours

Alternate means of transportation can be used in Ann Arbor, including the Zipcar, bicycles, and walking. Whichever method you prefer, many different means can be used to get around the city.

Undocumented and DACAmented Students
The Rackham Graduate School has put together resources for Undocumented and DACAmented students.
