What is the core work of teaching, and what is required to learn it and to do it? Developing answers to these questions is at the center of our mission at TeachingWorks.

Every day in this country, thousands of children miss out on educational opportunities because of teachers' uneven access to high-quality preparation and support. Having a skillful teacher has been a matter of chance and students of color and low-income have unequal access to good teaching. Making teachers' professional training as effective as that of other fields must be a top priority. At TeachingWorks we aim to make this vision a reality.

To achieve this, TeachingWorks supports efforts to identify practices of teaching that are particularly “high-leverage” for beginning and early career teachers. A “high-leverage practice” is an action or task central to teaching. Examples include recognizing common patterns of students’ thinking; conducting a whole class discussion; building relationships with students; choosing representations and examples; and assessing students’ learning.

The high-leverage practices are the core of the TeachingWorks mission and the foundation of all research, training, and materials development projects.
