This lesson is designed for high school World History or Humanities classes, or related electives, and develops students’ understandings of the concepts of syncretism and cultural diffusion through the analysis of diverse, global representations of the Virgin Mary. Studying the ways that religious figures like Mary get taken up and reinterpreted across time and space provides insight into how cultures mix and merge to create new belief systems, and also helps us understand unifying concepts and beliefs shared by different cultures around the world.
