Supporting teachers and teacher educators to respond to priority learning needs during the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond

Francesca Forzani (PI) and Deborah Ball (co-PI) will lead the project to support teachers and teacher educators in responding to priority learning needs during the 2020-2021 academic year and beyond through two lines of work.
In mathematics, we will offer a virtual weekly “laboratory” class serving students in grades 2-5, with associated professional learning opportunities for teachers, parents, novice teachers, and teacher educators who observe the class. In English language arts (ELA), we will create and offer a series of synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning modules for teacher educators, focused on key ELA content. In both math and ELA, the work will focus on recommendations for “priority” content for the Covid-19 school year made by Student Achievement Partners.
In both lines of work, the goals are to unpack aspects of the priority content and the content knowledge, teaching skills, and equity practices needed to teach it effectively to all children, and make those knowledge and skills learnable by teachers and teacher educators. The mathematics laboratory class will also serve the immediate learning needs of participating children, and, within the class, work to disrupt persistent patterns of inequity related to race, class, gender, and socioeconomic status.
