Shiawassee Scholars Program

The Shiawassee Scholars program was founded in 1999 as a joint effort between the Cook Family Foundation and the Shiawassee Regional Education Service District (SRESD). The mission of the program is to prepare academically talented students in Shiawassee County to be competitive applicants for higher education admission and scholarships, particularly at the University of Michigan.
Anecdotally, the Cook Family Foundation knows the program is effective, as they have consistently seen young students get excited about going to college, apply to college, be admitted, and attend U-M or other top institutions (e.g., University of Chicago and Harvard) and/or qualify for significant scholarships. However, there has never been a formal evaluation of the program. CEDER will conduct a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative evaluation of outcomes related to the Shiawassee Scholars program. Led by evaluation specialist Kolby Gadd, PhD, CEDER’s evaluation work will focus on academic outcomes that rely on data that have not been available to the program in the past, including information from U-M and other databases about students' grades, majors, and graduation status. This evaluation work will further focus on a description of the experiences and accomplishments of Shiawassee Scholars.
