OpenSciEd creates free, high quality, Next Generation Science Standards-aligned science materials and professional learning opportunities. For this development project, Dr. Wright co- leads the development of K-2 curriculum materials with Dr. Amelia Gotwals (at MSU). This work entails working with grade level leads and writing teams in modifying and redesigning existing SOLID Start curriculum materials to align with the OpenSciEd elementary instructional model and to ensure that there are coherent unit storylines for all K-2 units. These science curriculum units include teacher materials. The K-2 team works with the professional learning team to support teachers in learning about and implementing the units and with the field test team to use data to revise the units after they are field tested. All units are designed, field tested and then revised based on feedback. The K-2 team also communicates with the State Steering Committee, external advisors, and pilot teachers regarding unit development and/or revision. Publicly released elementary units from this project are available for free at this website.
Dr. Wright also leads the K-5 literacy integration team and works with all K-5 unit teams to develop design principles for the integration of literacy into all units. In addition, she works with Dr. Amanda Dahl (postdoctoral scholar at MSU) to develop informational texts for all 24 units that are being designed.
