The purpose of this grant is to accelerate both the learning of science content and scientific inquiry, as well as reading comprehension proficiency at the primary level (grades one and two). An integrated model of science and reading instruction will be implemented in 16 diverse school sites, using a cluster randomized trial design. Measures will include curriculum based science tests, nationally normed science and reading comprehension subtests, and student attitude toward and self-confidence in science learning and reading.
