The Indigenous Youth Education Collective is a youth participatory action research project led by – and for – Indigenous scholars and community members of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, with support from the University of Michigan and Lake Superior State University.
This year-long pilot study brings together community Elders, Indigenous knowledge keepers, and educational researchers to engage in coalitional work with 7th to 12th grade Native youth to support their learning of Indigenous ways, help revitalize community knowledge that has been lost, and help students better connect with their Native identities and navigate K-12 and higher education spaces. Through weekly meetings in a co-generative space, the Collective will construct deliverables and research products directly tied to students’ educational experiences and be guided toward designing studies that would empower participants and their community for local change.
