This multi-institution project will conduct a large-scale study on community-driven initiatives to teach Asian American Studies in K-12 classrooms. The study will explore how communities advocate for curricular policies mandating the teaching of Asian American studies and how these policies get implemented in schools and impact student learning.
Dr. Brown will serve as the co-principal investigator for the project, providing leadership on complementary methods of data collection and analysis. Dr. Brown’s expertise is in the analysis of large quantitative data sets for educational improvement and in the use of network methods to understand organizational learning and organizational change. As part of this project, he will help develop data collection instruments for all strands of the research, with an emphasis on network data related to case development and survey instruments for observing teacher and student learning impact. He will also lead the analysis of network data resources and contribute to the analytical strategies of qualitative and quantitative data sets. Dr. Brown will lead the development of case studies using social network methodology and contribute to the resulting toolkit that provides guidance on adoption and sustainability of Asian American Studies in K-12 contexts.
