Accessibility
In our dije 2.0 Strategic Plan, the Marsal Community committed to "Improving physical and digital accessibility throughout the Marsal School” as our fifth strategic objective. This tab provides an overview of important considerations for all community members to work toward enhancing accessibility. In addition, the accessibility tab provides information to assist community members in navigating the Marsal building.
- Classroom Accessibility Considerations Checklist
The Marsal Community is committed to ensuring that classrooms are arranged with accessibility considerations in mind. A class may temporarily rearrange the classroom furniture but must return all furniture to its original layout before a class period ends.
Desk Arrangement:
- Generally, all classroom desks must be arranged in a U-shape. The exceptions are the Whitney Classroom (Room 1315) and Classroom 2218 (the classroom with adjacent breakout rooms), where desks must be arranged in three rows.
- If you rearrange desks, ensure desks are returned to a position where the aisles near the entrances are at least 36 inches wide. This allows for wheelchair use in the classroom.
- Please ensure the route between the adjustable height desk and lectern is clear of obstacles, including unnecessary furniture and cords. This allows for wheelchair use in the classroom.
Adjustable Height Desk:
- The general rule is that the adjustable height desks must be left in a condition that allows a community member to use them immediately without needing to move any furniture.
- All adjustable-height desks have been thoughtfully placed near classroom entrances so those using wheelchairs can more easily access them. If you need to rearrange desks, please return them to their original position before leaving the classroom.
- The chair accompanying the adjustable height desk must always be kept at the adjustable height desk. A label is used to identify these chairs.
- The labeled chairs are designated for adjustable height desks to accommodate service animals.
- The adjustable height desk must be returned to its lowered position before leaving the classroom.
- The raiseable desk must be plugged in (if electric), facing the correct direction, and have no items left on the surface.
- There are also adjustable height desks in Schorling Auditorium and Pretcher Lab, and all of the considerations above apply to these tables.
Fragrances Considerations:
- Fragrance is an ingredient in many personal care and cleaning products, often listed as “scent” or “parfum."
- Some individuals have immediate reactions to fragrance due to allergies or sensitivities to fragrance and/or chemicals. A 2016 study found that 34% of the US population reports health problems when exposed to fragrance.
- Sinus congestion, sore throat, wheezing, coughing, runny nose, and shortness of breath;
- Headache and dizziness;
- Anxiety, anger, nausea, fatigue, mental confusion, and an inability to concentrate.
- These symptoms can greatly impact people’s ability to attend class, work, or events, and to participate fully in their communities.
- Please review the "Share the Air Toolkit on Fragrance Considerations" to learn more about ways you can contribute to an environment by reducing fragrance use.
- Important note: For some individuals, using fragrance-free products may not be an option. Many fragrance-free products are cost-prohibitive, and fragrance-free alternatives to some products—for example, hair care products designed for people of color—may be difficult to find. For some, fragrances may have cultural or religious significance.
- Bathroom Features
Below is a table listing all bathrooms available in the Marsal Building.
Please note that some features are available in all bathrooms, including a wheelchair-accessible stall and menstrual care products. Whereas, some have unique features, including single occupancy stalls or infant changing stations.
