- Eligibility
Marsal Education students in both Educator Preparation Programs (the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts with Teacher Certification) at both elementary and secondary levels are invited to pursue a teaching pathway in Detroit at The School at Marygrove (a DPSCD-Marsal Education Collaborative School).
- Preservice Learning
By joining Marsal Education’s Educator Preparation Program, you are eligible to engage as an intern and/or student teacher in the Michigan Education Teaching School, housed at The School at Marygrove. Here, you will learn to teach with the support of expert mentor teachers in our partnership school in Detroit.

- When you complete your teaching certificate, you are eligible for the Marsal Education Teaching Residency.
- Teaching Residency
Those who have been part of preservice learning in the Michigan Education Teaching School and have received their teacher certification are eligible to apply for a three-year residency in Detroit. Candidates must demonstrate their commitments to high-quality teaching and learning for Detroit students and within the collaborative Teaching School environment.
Key Benefits
- You will work as a full-time, paid teacher at The School at Marygrove and other Detroit schools.
While teaching, you will be supported by expert teachers at the school (“attending teachers”) and Marsal Education faculty and staff through professional development opportunities, curriculum development, instructional coaching, and other professional learning and leadership.
You are eligible for scholarships toward graduate coursework and toward your required credits/clock hours for the professional certificate in the State of Michigan.
- At the conclusion of your three-year residency, you will have the priority hiring opportunities to teach at other Detroit schools.
- Apply to the U-M Detroit Teaching Pathway
- Indicate interest in the program on surveys from staff. Staff and faculty work with mentor teachers to determine capacity for teaching interns and assess fit to match interns with mentor teachers.
- Become a Teaching Intern. Teaching Interns work with mentor teachers & conduct supported instruction in the classroom. The length of teaching intern placements vary by program and subject area.
- Become a Student Teacher. In the final semester of the program, Student Teachers take greater responsibility for instruction in collaboration with supportive mentor teachers and teaching interns.
- Graduate and attain teacher certification
- Apply to become a U-M Detroit Teaching Resident. Teaching Residents are regular, full-time teachers employed by Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD). Residents will be selected from candidates on the U-M Detroit Teaching Pathway with demonstrated commitments to high-quality teaching and learning for Detroit students.
- Teach for three years as a U-M Detroit Teaching Resident. Teaching Residents are supported by U-M Marsal Family School of Education faculty and staff through professional development opportunities, curriculum development, instructional coaching, and other professional learning and leadership.
- Spread your impact as a Teacher-Leader. After completing the three-year residency, U-M Detroit Teaching Residents become teacher-leaders at schools throughout Detroit and are supported with targeted job matching to continue their careers.
