In a series of profiles featuring graduating seniors, the University Record shared the story of Robyn Raimey’s educational journey.

Raimey was identified as having a learning exceptionality in elementary school and received support through sixth grade, reports the Record. During that time, she also benefited from tutoring provided by an undergraduate University of Michigan student. The support she relied on ended after elementary school, and Raimey struggled academically through middle and high school, however the student tutor’s care and attention always stayed with her.

Raimey went on to attend cosmetology school, and over two decades built a successful business as a freelance hair stylist and trainer while simultaneously working an administrative office job. After a painful divorce, and a period of self-reflection, she decided to pursue her passion for elementary education. In large part, it was the student tutor who had worked with her when she was young that inspired Raimey to apply to the Marsal School to earn her degree.

On Saturday, May 3, Raimey was the student speaker at the Marsal School’s commencement ceremony. She won’t enter the classroom just yet, though—her next step is staying on at the Marsal School to earn her master’s degree in educational studies.
