Dean Elizabeth Moje will be presented with the 2024 John J. Gumperz Memorial Award for Distinguished Lifetime Scholarship at the Language and Social Processing Special Interest Group meeting during the annual American Educational Research Association (AERA) conference in April.

Dr. John Gumperz was a linguist, anthropologist, and developer of Interactional Sociolinguistics. Through his lifelong commitment to learning and developing ideas, Gumperz was a role model who laid a foundation for deconstructing deficit models of education based on linguistic performance. The award recognizes and honors the lifelong distinguished scholarship of a senior scholar whose program of research in language and social processes and professional service has made significant contributions to the field and to the work and vision of the Language and Social Processes Special Interest Group.

On behalf of the John J. Gumperz Award committee, Dr. Audra Skukauskaitė writes, "Dean Moje was selected for the award based on strong letters of support as well as the record of her lifetime contributions to the field of language and social processes, particularly her work in integrating theory, policy, and research in ways that are responsive to the needs and perspectives of communities in which she studies, lives, and works. This contextual and in-depth exploration of language, literacy, and sociocultural contexts, as well as her lifetime commitment to mentoring new generations embodies and carries John J. Gumperz’s commitments to equity, diversity, and access."
