Researchers, policymakers, and the general public often use terms such as elite and flagship to group higher education institutions, but what exactly do those groups look like and what are the core features for identifying an institution as "elite" or a "flagship?"
Utilizing over 950 articles published in 12 journals central to the higher education literature over 40 years, this project documents the rise of these terms in the literature and the features used to describe what constitutes elite and flagship universities. Then, these same derived organizational features are applied to current institutional data and multivariate analyses uncover a complex pattern of associations suggesting a self-reinforcing manifestation of organizational status and boundary work.
