Children’s books contain many complex words, and these can be a barrier to their ability to understand what they read. One of the primary ways in which words are complex is that they are made up of roots and affixes, also known morphemes. I review our recent theory on how children use morphemes to help them in their reading. I also present data from several large-scale longitudinal study testing these ideas.
