Demetri L. Morgan, PhD (he/him), is an associate professor of education at the University of Michigan's Marsal Family School of Education in the Center for the Study of Postsecondary and Higher Education and an affiliate faculty member in Organizational Studies.
Dr. Morgan’s research focuses on the critical role that higher education institutions play in fostering a diverse democracy. He aims to highlight, in an anti-deficit manner, how individuals navigate, resist, and transform socio-political systems, policies, and organizational cultures. His primary research areas include: (a) the impact of student political engagement and activism on institutional change, (b) the influence of culturally sustaining governance on institutional transformation, and (c) the development of more sustainable organizational approaches to STEM education. Dr. Morgan serves as the Co-Director of the recently established Center for Strategic & Inclusive Governance, which is jointly housed at the University of Michigan and the University of California, Riverside. He is also a Faculty Fellow at the American Association of University Professors’ Center for the Defense of Academic Freedom.
Dr. Morgan’s work has been published in leading educational journals, such as Higher Education: Handbook of Research and Theory, The Journal of Higher Education, Review of Higher Education, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, Journal of College Student Development, and Journal of Engineering Education, among others. He co-edited the book “Student Activism, Politics, and Campus Climate in Higher Education” with Dr. Charles H. F. Davis III in 2019. Furthermore, Dr. Morgan has secured over $5 million in external grants and contracts to support various projects. He has also co-authored numerous book chapters, technical papers, and Op-Eds on topics including institutional governance, campus climate, political engagement and student activism, and race in higher education. A sought-after media contributor and public speaker, Dr. Morgan was a former fellow of the Place-Based Justice Network and was recognized as an Emerging Scholar by ACPA College Educators International in 2021.
