More Than Accommodations: Including Disability and Engaging Ableism in Education

Our first Lunch & Learn event this year was led by Dr. Shanna K. Kattari who discussed ableism in education and ways to offer more inclusive events at the SOE. Participants had an opportunity to learn about inclusive terminology, able-bodied privilege, and research on ableism in education. The event concluded with individuals reflecting on ways to create assignments, assign readings, and build classroom policies that are inclusive of all abilities.

Promoting Internationalism and Multiculturalism through a Social Justice Lens: The Case of Macalester College

Macalester College is well known for its academic excellence, strong commitment to teaching, and activist values. Unlike other comparable small liberal arts colleges, its structural diversity is well above average: about one-third of its students are students of color and 24% are citizens of another country. About one-third of its faculty are U.S. or international people of color.

In this context, what challenges face educators who are responsible for promoting diversity on campus? At this Lunch & Learn conversation, two Macalester Deans who oversee a wide range of offices and services shared their insights and experiences about the value of adding a social justice lens to their work in a learning environment with a long history of promoting intercultural experiences. Marjorie Trueblood, Dean of Multicultural Life and Donna Maeda, Dean of the Kofi Annan Institute for Global Citizenship led an engaging conversation around diversity in academia and ways to engage a social justice lens through recruitment.
