The School at Marygrove's senior internship program featured in Model D
Students are applying their training in engineering, design, and social justice to complete internships at sites across the Marygrove campus.
From helping young learners design their own toys in the Marygrove Early Education Center to assisting the IHM Sisters (who founded the college and still live on campus) with campus beautification, the first class of seniors at The School at Marygrove (TSM) are working with an array of staff and vendors across the Marygrove campus to complete their internships.
In the first part of their internship, students are required to work two days a week for four weeks, for a total of 12 hours at their internship site. In the second part, interns complete their Capstone Project, a proposal to improve the internship site. Students then meet with stakeholders and spend additional time at the site to implement their ideas.
“Our placements are going to give our students opportunities that no other students in the district or in the city will have a chance to explore while still in high school,” teaching resident Hunter Janness told Model D.
The internships are central to TSM’s four-year project- and place-based engineering and design curriculum (co-developed by the DPSCD and the University of Michigan Marsal Family School of Education) that allows students to determine, collude, and solve complex problems, and engage in the creation of a more just and equitable future.
