President Ono highlights Marsal programs in article about U-M's initiatives and investments in Detroit
In a July 25 opinion article in The Detroit News, U-M president Santa J. Ono described Detroit-based programming and investments made by the university.
Ono celebrated the 300+ U-M programs and initiatives in Detroit, calling out the successful growth of the Detroit P-20 Partnership and the exciting launch of Learning, Equity, and Problem Solving for the Public Good (LEAPS): “For example, the Detroit P-20 Partnership demonstrates the power of neighborhood revitalization that centers education at the heart of community growth and thriving. The Marygrove Learning Community features a prenatal through early childhood education center, K-12 public school, health and human services, and a program to prepare and retain Detroit educators.
“Because of the Detroit P-20 Partnership, families have the opportunity to send their children to school on the Marygrove Learning Community campus from infancy through high school. Students benefit from a holistic approach to education that accounts for their health and developmental needs while providing outstanding academic experiences.
“The campus's public K-12 school, The School at Marygrove, features project- and place-based learning with an emphasis on engineering and design thinking for social justice.
This fall, the Marsal Family School of Education is launching its new degree program, Learning, Equity, and Problem Solving for the Public Good. These U-M students will have a special residential experience living and learning for one year in the LiveSix/Marygrove neighborhood.”
