Pat Herbst becomes editor in chief of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has announced that Dr. Patricio Herbst will be the next editor in chief of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME).
JRME, an official journal of NCTM, is the premier research journal in mathematics education. It is devoted to the interests of teachers and researchers at all levels—preschool through college. It is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that is published five times a year.
JRME is a forum for disciplined inquiry into the teaching and learning of mathematics. Focus areas include:
• research reports, addressing important research questions and issues in mathematics education;
• brief reports of research;
• research commentaries on issues pertaining to mathematics education research; and
• book reviews.
Herbst has been a reviewer for JRME since 1997, and was a member of the Editorial Panel between 2015 and 2018. Herbst’s research seeks to describe the work of mathematics teaching as a subject-specific activity and to explain the use of representations of practice in teacher education. He uses a variety of methods including classroom teaching experiments, scenario-based questionnaires and assessments, and online discourse analysis.
“We’re delighted to have Dr. Herbst as the next editor in chief of The Journal for Research in Mathematics Education,” said Dr. Robert Berry, NCTM President. “Dr. Herbst’s experience and background will certainly continue to move the JRME forward while honoring the history and legacy that has been established over the past 49 years.”
“I look forward to stewarding the culture of scholarly excellence that JRME promotes in our field, while we strive to bring to the attention of readers a wider array of research methods, promote the development of theory, and disseminate usable knowledge,” said Herbst.
