Matthew Ronfeldt co-authors brief on teacher training during COVID-19
The Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University and Results for America released four new EdResearch for Recovery briefs from some of the country's leading researchers to help policymakers, educators, parents, and others respond to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
SOE professor Matthew Ronfeldt is co-author on the brief “Sustaining Teacher Training in a Shifting Environment.” Together with Dan Goldhaber (National Center for Analysis of Longitudinal Data in Education Research and Center for Education Data and Research at the University of Washington), they explore the question, “What research evidence exists on student teaching experiences that could inform how teacher preparation programs and school systems respond to the COVID-19 crisis?” The authors pose key issues, suggest strategies to consider, and identify strategies to avoid.
The brief states, “Student teaching placements influence teacher effectiveness. If student teaching experiences are constrained by the pandemic, teacher candidates will lose valuable experiences and schools will lose the opportunity to shape and evaluate prospective hires.” Citing several studies on virtual teacher training experiences, mixed reality professional development, and mentoring, the team recommends several strategies to support teacher development during the upheaval in schools and universities caused by COVID-19.
