Marsal School faculty and staff featured in new video showcasing projects funded by Anti-Racism Collaborative grants

The Anti-Racism Collaborative offers a set of grant programs to support research innovation and engagement of anti-racism research for public impact.

The National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) has produced a new video that shows recent research projects that have benefited from Anti-Racism Collaborative (ARC) grant funding. The Marsal School’s Victoria Shaw (grant recipient for “Anti-Racism and Precedents for Change") and Charles H.F. Davis III (grant recipient for “Anti-Racism Research & Community Impact Faculty Fellow”) are both featured. 

Drawing on NCID’s Grants for Social Change model, small seed grants are available through the ARC to support faculty research and scholarship on topics related to racism, racial equity, and racial justice. These grants support new ideas or allow for an expansion of existing projects in ways that significantly enhance theoretical and/or methodological rigor, precision, nuance. 

Davis says, “My project was to understand the discrepancies and differences between how communities that exist in proximity to colleges and universities might conceptualize ideas of safety differently than the institution itself.” 

Shaw’s team received an NCID seed grant in 2021 that led to the development of a paid gallery education program at UMMA. “For one of our 25+ training sessions, Katie Robertson and Debi Khasnabis led a workshop focused on how to lead with care rather than manage for control. It was cited as being one of the most influential parts of our training. The program continues to grow, and we are excited to see where we go next with our partners!” says Shaw. 

The ARC functions from the premise that racism is a social reality and that intellectual inquiry into racism has legitimacy and validity. It is hosted at the NCID and is a part of the Office of the Provost's efforts to enhance U-M's capacity for advancing racial equity and justice in society.
