Dean Elizabeth Moje speaks about Duolingo’s new AI features with Forbes
Moje says that AI will not be able to replace the intangible skills of human tutors.
In a Forbes feature on the language learning app Duolingo, founder and CEO Luis von Ahn says that AI may put one-on-one tutors out of business. However, he argues, the net gain will be worth it if everyone has access to individualized learning assistance.
“von Ahn is optimistic that AI could unlock new possibilities for learning, bringing high-quality education to the masses,” writes Richard Nieva for Forbes. “He thinks languages can help lift people out of poverty, noting that, for non-native speakers, learning English instantly broadens a person’s earning potential and opens up a whole new world of jobs.”
Although she’s excited about the possibilities of Duolingo’s new AI features, Elizabeth Birr Moje, dean of the Marsal Family School of Education, said she doesn’t believe an AI tool will ever be able to replace the intangible skills of human tutors: “It cannot see if a student is experiencing frustration. It cannot see body language. It cannot see joy.”
