CSHPE student Gordon Palmer wins Ford Dissertation Fellowship

April 17, 2020

CSHPE PhD student Gordon Palmer has won a Ford Dissertation Fellowship. This Fellowship Program aims to “increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.”

Palmer's dissertation investigates the role of social identities (race and gender), cultural ideologies (i.e., religiosity/spirituality) and spatial contexts (i.e., cities and urban higher education institutions) in the socio-political development of emerging adult women of color.

Ford Dissertation Fellowships provide one year of support for students working to complete a dissertation leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of Science (ScD) degree. The Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship is intended to support the final year of writing and defense of the dissertation.

Fellowships are awarded in a national competition administered by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on behalf of the Ford Foundation. They recognize individuals who demonstrate superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well-prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.
