Audience: Middle and High School teachers interested in implementing engineering design projects in their classrooms in the context of the Next Generation Science Standards.

With the advent of the Next Generation Science Standards, engineering design practices are, for the first time, included in the standards that are intended to drive science instruction. These practices are new to most teachers.

Join the Center for Education Design, Evaluation, and Research for a professional learning experience in which we will explore how to integrate Next Generation Science Standards engineering and design practices and concepts into our instruction using hands-on practice and dialogue with colleagues.

• Participate in a team-based design challenge and get feedback from engineering experts.
• Go “meta” and reflect on how you can use similar activities in your own classroom.
• Learn about and discuss engineering design and design cycles in the context of NGSS and explore their instructional implications.
• Connect design experiences to research-based science pedagogies.
• Learn about and apply relevant disciplinary literacy practices and discuss how to integrate them into your instruction.
• Share ideas, strategies, and resources with colleagues.
• Engage in a supported design studio experience to begin developing instructional activities for your own classroom.
