Internship Program for Master's Students

The internship is a critical component of the Higher Education master’s program in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education (CSHPE). Internships provide an opportunity for students to engage in integral hands-on work experience that complements the knowledge they gain through coursework.

During their first year, master’s students have the opportunity to expand their skill base by engaging in professional practice across a wide array of functional areas. Students typically pursue an internship during the following summer and fall as well, although this is optional. The internship program includes sites that provide experience in research and program evaluation, curriculum development, academic program management, student affairs and services, and other areas.

Full-time students enrolled in the CSHPE master’s degree program are expected to complete a two-semester paid internship in a professional placement related to higher education, either at the University of Michigan or another postsecondary institution. The graduate internship is a part-time position in which students work an average 10-20 hours per week. CSHPE internships pay a minimum of $19 an hour, with a recommended wage of $20-23. They do not provide tuition remission or health insurance.
