Matthew Diemer honored with 2019 CSES Award for Emerging Leadership in Psychology
In recognition of his scholarship, contributions, and community engagement related to the understanding of counseling and educational psychology, Dr. Matthew Diemer has received the 2019 CSES Award for Emerging Leadership in Psychology. This award is conferred by the American Psychological Association (APA) Committee on Socioeconomic Status to honor the outstanding achievements of psychologists, students of psychology, and organizations that have made significant contributions to the understanding of socioeconomic status and the lives and well-being of the socioeconomically disadvantaged.
Awardees have made contributions by promoting scientific understanding of the impact of poverty and SES (socioeconomic status) on health, education, and human welfare; developing applications of psychology that address the effects of SES on psychological development and well-being; and/or advocating for social policy that will alleviate or reduce disparities among SES groups.
In a letter, the committee stated that Diemer’s selection for this award speaks to his influence on SES-related issues and his dedication and leadership in applying psychology to broadening the understanding of the roles of SES and poverty in human welfare. They commended him for his tremendous work and eagerly await his future contributions.
The CSES Award for Emerging Leadership in Psychology will be presented at the August APA Convention in Chicago. Emerging leaders are psychologists who have 15 or fewer years beyond their terminating degree achievement, have made a substantial contribution to SES in psychology, and demonstrate promising professional achievement.
