Congrats, Secondary TE grads

On behalf of the faculty, instructors, and staff of the secondary teacher education program, congratulations 2020 graduates! In the midst of the current challenges, at least one thing is certain - teachers are necessary. Over the past 1 1/2 months we have watched teachers across the nation quickly adapt to teaching virtually and also extend themselves to maintain the relationships and rapport they built with their students to show the type of care and concern that gives the socio-emotional support that so many require during this crisis. In many ways, teachers have become signposts of stability and hope that youth, their families, and communities need. You can proudly count yourself amongst that group and in that number.

The pandemic has made more transparent the pervasive issues of educational equity and justice. While these problems require broad systemic solutions, the small pro-justice and pro-equity choices and interactions that teachers make daily also fundamentally disrupt the status quo. It is said that these small forces create big change. In essence, teachers are forces of transformation. That is an incredible power, and one that is needed now more than ever. This means that as Wolverines and teachers you are leaders and best and forces with which to reckon for the educational benefit of all students.. Know that as you enter the profession these are the times that beckon well-prepared educators, such as you. You will be the teacher whom your students need to help them make sense of and find their own voice and agency amid the complex challenges of their communities and the world in which we live, especially during these unprecedented times. For this reason, remember to center them in all aspects of your teaching and decision-making. Continue to inquire about your practice and continue to learn for your benefit and theirs. Know that we are here for you, even as alumni, to help with that ongoing, lifelong process of continual learning.

Go blue, and go teach!

Yours in service,
